De twee overlevende Belgen in de beloftenreeks tijdens de Open van Spanje werden in de tweede ronde uitgeschakeld door sterkere tegenstanders.

Vroeg of laat moest er wel een eind komen aan de ongeslagen status van Robin Devos in Almeria. Dat gebeurde in de 1/8ste finale van de beloftenreeks, waarin de leerling van de Leuvense Topsportschool zijn meerdere moest erkennen in de genaturaliseerde Turk Li Ahmet. Ook voor Lauric Jean was de 1/8ste finale het eindpunt in de Open van Spanje: hij verloor van de genaturaliseerde Singaporees Chen Feng.
